WAVA consolidates on gains from the Uyo Legislative Retreat

img-20161116-wa0015WAVA in collaboration with DCL and ONE Campaign made a courtesy visit to Hon. Chike John Okafor, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Health Services at the National Assembly, Abuja on November 8th, 2016. The visit was to brief the Chair on the outcome of the legislative retreat and discuss further collaboration on driving the agenda for increased budgetary allocation to the health sector, particularly immunization. The legislative retreat took place on October 29, 2016 at Le Meridian Hotel, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The chairman apologized for his absence at the retreat due to the exigencies of his work with the governor of the state. He further acknowledged that his deputy chair and committee members had briefed him on the outcomes and resolutions of the retreat to which he conveyed his full support.

Hon. Chike’s unwavering commitment was also expressed when he talked about some motions he will raise at the House of Representatives based on the findings of the legislative retreat. He stated that efforts are being made for a public hearing on health financing in Nigeria on November 22 and 23, where most of the communique findings from the retreat will be deliberated upon.

WAVA and ONE Campaign promised continued support to Hon. Chike’s committee on both increasing the appropriation for immunization and the implementation of not less than 1% of the consolidated revenue fund (CRF) to finance the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) as stipulated in the National Health Act.

The courtesy visit was made by Dr. Chizoba Wonodi (WAVA Convener), Nachilala Nkombo (Deputy Director, Africa ONE Campaign), Dr. Francis Ohanyido (Global Policy Advisor, ONE Campaign) Edwin Ikhuoria (Nigeria Country Representative, ONE Campaign), Chisom Obi (Senior Program Officer, DCL) and Dr. Obinna Ebirim (Senior Program Officer, DCL).
