Senate President and wife show support for immunization

Coming off the heels of the quarterly meeting of WAVA vaccine champions, Her Excellency Mrs. Toyin Saraki made a live appearance on Wednesday morning 26 April, 2017 on the radio talk show, #TalkHealth9ja on Wazobia FM 99.5 Abuja. During the show, she spoke with on-air-personality BigMoNaija to discuss the value of vaccines and the need for government to ensure adequate immunization financing. Her Excellency, using the popular catchphrase – ‘vaccine good oh’ – beckoned on all Nigerians to increase their demand for life-saving immunization services.

In similar vein, her husband and His Excellency, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki visited the National Assembly hospital in the same morning to vaccinate children against meningitis and polio, as part of activities to mark World Immunization Week, which coincide African Vaccination Week. Her Excellency Mrs. Toyin Saraki captured this on her Instagram page. His Excellency, Dr. Bukola Saraki announced his visit on Twitter where he stated: “As we mark #WorldImmunizationWeek, we must all encourage our families and communities to embrace vaccines as a preventive healthcare measure.” His Excellency also granted an interview where he encouraged parents and especially mothers to bring their children to health facilities and receive immunization. The Senate President acknowledged that vaccines work and stated that government will do their part to ensure vaccines are available in the country.

The occurrence of this duo of events may be connected to WAVA’s advocacy activities within the week and offers some assurance that the National Assembly is aware and understands the importance of vaccines. We hope that this would translate into providing sufficient funds for the routine immunization programme.
