The Wife of the President of the Senate and Founder of Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Her Excellency, Mrs Toyin Saraki, has restated her commitment to working towards equitable access to immunization services in Nigeria.
She made the statement while she hosted the National Convener of the Women Advocates for Vaccine Access (WAVA), Dr Chizoba Wonodi, who led her technical team to share and discuss WAVA’s 2017 work plan. Mrs Saraki also commended WAVA for sustaining its advocacy for sustainable immunization financing and deployment, and expressed her optimism that, with continued efforts at advocacy and accountability, we can all get the important stakeholders, including government and the donor community, to meet their funding obligations. She promised to support WAVA to actualize the planned activities on the work plan.
Earlier, the WAVA Convener had commended Mrs Saraki for being a strong and passionate advocate for immunization, within her broad scope of work in reproductive maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health. She also said, “Having you as a vaccine champion has further energized the advocacy for immunization services to reach every child no matter where s/he lives. We really appreciate the superb presentation you made to the National Assembly during the recent public hearing on the 2017 budget proposal, where you presented the demand of over 70 CSOs for improved funding for primary health care, under the auspices of the Primary Health Care Revitalisation Support Group (PHCRSG) which you chair.”
It may be recalled that Mrs Saraki was one of the seven eminent Nigerians inaugurated as Vaccine Champions by WAVA in December 2016. Also at the meeting were the WAVA Technical Advisor, Dr Laz Ude Eze; the Technical Officer, Dr Obinna Ebirim; and Dr Luther-King Fasehun, Nigeria Country Director of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa.
